The Adam Sandler matrix

I agree with this for the most part.  However, there are two things I want to add to solidify my personal point of view on this.  One is that I saw Eight Crazy Nights in the theater when it came out and I loved it.  I laughed so hard at Whitey.  I just couldn’t stop.  I watched it again a couple years ago, and it was terrible.  So that either explains something very important about watching Adam Sandler movies in general, or proves that there is something very important about watching Adam Sandler movies in general that is completely inexplicable.
Another, more important thing: I grew up on Adam Sandler (of course on SNL and also his) albums.  The audio sketch comedy and comedy songs on those albums were fucking gold to me.  I still think about them sometimes.  There are REALLY REALLY funny moments in them.  I think I would place all his albums at the very top of the Brilliant/Silly quadrant of this graph.  And I also don’t think these works should be completely forgotten just because the bottom two quadrants on this graph have come to exist.  They are part of his career.  SNL is too. He’s done more good things than you think.  He’s just done a lot of shitty things, and the current ratio of good to shit has become alarming.  Also, he did Punch Drunk Love, which now serves as a vehicle to just taunt everyone, as if to say “hey everyone, I can do AMAZING movies if I feel like it!  I can be incredibly funny, real, heartbreaking, and important.  I can have great taste and great choices and work with people like Paul Thomas Anderson, that guy you’d keep if only like 5 directors existed! BUT FUCK YOU!!!!”
Adam Sandler’s career has excited, inspired, angered, saddened, and disappointed me at different points.  When I was growing up he was one of my biggest inspirations.  I could probably even say he’s one of my favorite AND least favorite comedians of all time.  There are things he’s done that serve as perfect examples of the pinnacle in comedic achievement, and things he’s done that serve as perfect examples of what I think completely ruin comedy as a whole.  And it’s not a fine line.  It’s just incredible and horrifying decisions he’s made. There will always be a special place for him in my comedy heart.
And that’s why I’m currently sad, angry, and disappointed. And I have been for some time.  But I guess if he plays a serious role in a movie that directly makes fun of his career and directly speaks to these exact feelings I have about him, I’ll hope for it to be my favorite movie of all time, see it the day it comes out, and love it, but not nearly as much as I hoped I would.  Hmm, maybe I’ll write a similar post about Judd Apatow….

Whoever took this photo is such a prick.  Hey asshole, how bout a photo of my beautiful view of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway?  There’s a giant Public Service Announcement billboard that takes up 90% of the sunset that would otherwise be visible from my window, which is mostly covered by a fire escape cage installed by the previous tenant who was afraid robbers would jump up a story onto the fire escape and break in!  ALSO I DON’T OWN A SINGLE PLANT, GET THOSE FUCKING FLOWERS OUT OF THERE.

Don’t let some stupid earthquake keep you from watching me in this video! I play a human man in it!

The baby I got to work with, Haaziq, is the best baby actor in town. A consummate actor, exceedingly professional, plus his little shoes matched his shorts and Surf! shirt.

Need a baby? Call Zip Baby. THIS IS A SKETCH ABOUT A BABY RENTAL SERVICE

KevinDarren, and I wrote this; Kevin directed, Darren produced, & I shot/edited it.

Travis, Halle, Jaime, Ryan, Allison, Emily, & Taylor all did a great job, so did Haaziq, Brooklyn, & Violet (the babies).

Shout out to 2nd Ryan & Sam for helping out on production.

    Comedy People on Google+

    Hey everyone,

I’m trying to help build the comedy community on Google+ so that people can more easily become aware of other comedians, writers, industry people, etc. on Google+.  I created a post here in the hopes that anyone involved in comedy would comment and make themselves known.

I know that not everyone is that into or familiar with Google+ yet but I really think it can be a good tool to build the community, post/share original content, and even help in terms of the writing process with drafts, critiques, etc., all just because of the way you share what you write so selectively.

So if you’re willing/interested, please go to the post and post a comment, link to it as stated in the post, and/or reblog this post on tumblr.  Obviously there are a shit ton of other comedy people on tumblr already, so if this spreads around tumblr, I’m sure it will help.

Also if you’re not on Google+ and would like an invite, let me know and I’ll send you one.

"All of the ones who are successful, to a one, never tried to make me laugh in the elevator. Let your work speak for itself. You’re not going to start as a writer. You’re going to start getting someone coffee. Do your job. Be professional, watch, listen, and then do your work. … It’s all about finding out what your passion is. That’s what’s going to be funny. It’s what Johnny Carson told me—be yourself. Just be yourself. It’s the only rule that works."

I had a vision of a way we could have no enemies ever again if you’re interested in this, anybody interested in hearing this? It’s kind of an interesting theory and all we have to do is make one decisive act and we can rid the world of all our enemies at once. Here’s what we do. You know all that money we spend on nuclear weapons and defense every year? Trillions of dollars. Instead, if we spent that money feeding and clothing the poor of the world which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded (not one) we could as one race, explore outer space together in peace, forever.

Thank you very much, you’re great.

    Bill Hicks, “One Night Stand”

This is the best ending to a comedy special I’ve ever seen.  And I’m not even spoiling the ending.

There are four Bill Hicks specials streaming on Netflix right now.  And American: The Bill HIcks Story is playing this month at the Village Cinema East in New York.

    Watch all of it.

The Coolest Kids in School: The Surprising Influence of the National College Comedy Festival

    travishelwig:

I wrote this article on Skidmore’s National College Comedy Festival for Splitsider.  It’s easily the most research I’ve done in my life.

Read, comment with your Skidmore stories, pass it along, and tell me what you think!

When I was a freshman at this festival, I saw the Hammerkatz perform what are now famous Derrick sketches.  Derrick didn’t exist yet.  But that set had connections between each sketch, and merged stage sketch with video.  They even pre-recorded video in the theater to make it look like we were seeing what happened live right after a character stormed out of the theater.  I felt like I had never really seen sketch until then.

On the same night, I saw UCB TourCo for the first time.  Anthony King started their show by saying it was really special for them to be there, because they remember being there as college students themselves.  Then they performed the most incredible improv set I’d ever seen in my life.  The cast was Anthony King, Chris Gethard, Shannon O’Neill, Neil Casey, and Joe Wengert.

It was no surprise when the members of Derrick came back the next year as Derrick, a professional group, after graduating from the Hammerkatz (when you’re in college comedy, you graduate from your comedy group, not your school).  I didn’t know they would do improv, and not sketch.  They raised the bar and showed me again the best improv I’d ever seen up till then.  I was already doing everything I could to contribute to making receSs a group that someone could see on stage one day and be even somewhat inspired to try to accomplish the same.

I really think that at Skidmore, there is never anything like seeing your first Skidmore show, and there is never anything like performing in your last Skidmore show.

    Read this article.

Mike DeStefano dies | Punchline Magazine

    -saturdaynightlive:

    somuchfunithurts:

For a guy who overcame so much to finally get to where he was, this is horribly sad news. His WTF interview from a little while back was amazing.

Incredibly sad news. Download his interview on WTF with Marc Maron here. As said, DeStefano overcame many challenges in his life including drug addiction and a diagnosis of HIV/AIDS, before achieving success last year as a finalist on Last Comic Standing. He was set to debut his one-man show A Cherry Tree in The Bronx in Barrow Street Theatre on Wednesday.

    May he rest in peace.

This is so sad.  His WTF interview was one of the most inspirational things I’ve ever heard.

I was so excited to see his recent one man show, but found out that it was more money than I could really afford to spend at the time, and didn’t go.  I think it may have been sold out anyway.  But fuck.  I should have just spent the money.

Most importantly, it was clear that he was the real deal.  It was clear that he was such a good person, and was on his way to giving so much to the world of comedy.

    RIP

Tonight’s the night! Tonight at 8 at The Creek and the Cave, Butts will compete in the first level of The Arena! If you miss this, you will be missing out on a generation-defining event that people will be talking about for years to come. And, more importantly, we’ll be missing out on your sweet, sweet votes which we need to continue and define more generations. So come, please!

Guys I know all of you like comedy and those who don’t still like butts.  Butts are entertaining even if you don’t like comedy.  There are no people who are reading this that don’t like comedy AND don’t like butts.  If I am wrong and you are one of those people, reblog this and tell me and you will win. But first, just say the word “butts” out loud.  If you laugh you have to come to the show.
In fact I think anyone who reads this and says “butts” out loud and at least smiles should feel obligated to to come to the show.
But if you don’t laugh at the show you don’t have to vote for us.  Let’s keep this strictly a series of obligations that are completely warranted.
